DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Trailing by two, Jax State had a three-point attempt fall just short, resulting in an 82-80 loss at the hands of Toledo in the Boardwalk Battle semifinals. The Gamecocks couldn't cool a scorching-hot Toledo team from three, as the Rockets made 14-of-25 (56%) attempts from beyond the arc.
With the loss, Jax State falls to 4-2 and will now play James Madison in the third-place game, while Toledo improves to 5-1 and will play UC San Diego for the Boardwalk Battle championship game.
Jax State led 41-34 at the half, before a scorching hot Toledo team shot 62 percent from three in the second half to erase the Gamecock lead with 13:03 left in the contest. Toledo would not surrender the lead for the remainder of the game.
The Rockets led by as many as eight points in the second half, before Jax State made a late push for the lead. Jax State scored five straight points in just under two minutes to bring the game within one, but a pair of Toledo jump shots made the advantage six points with 38 seconds remaining.
Three pointers from
Jaron Pierre Jr. and
Koree Cotton alongside a layup from Pierre with six seconds remaining left the door open for a last second shot following a Toledo missed free throw. The potential game-winning three pointer rattled around the rim before falling as time expired.
Pierre led the team with 13 first half points, while
Marcellus Brigham Jr. added nine to help the Gamecocks to a 41-34 lead at halftime.
Pierre finished the game with 20 points while Cotton, a Florida native, added 13 points of his own. Brigham wrapped up with 12 points while
Michael Houge also clocked out with 11 points.
Jax State out-rebounded the Rockets 41-26 and finished with a 32-20 edge in paint points. Toledo finished with five more made three pointers on just one more three-point attempt.
The Rockets finished with five guys in double figures, including Sam Lewis, who led the team with 16 points on 4-of-5 shooting from three.
Jax State is set to play James Madison in the final round of the Boardwalk Battle on Nov. 23 at 2:30 p.m. central time.
