Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Gamecocks Fall as Planella has Career Night

OREM, Utah – The Jacksonville State women's basketball team fell in their fourth consecutive match on Monday evening at Utah Valley. The Gamecocks lost 45-49 to the hosting Wolverines, but there was at least one star for Jax State.

Clara Gonzalez Planella set a new career-high in scoring as she led Jax State with 19 points. Her 19 were also the most by any individual across both teams. She set a career-high in field goals made with six as she shot an efficient 6-13 from the floor. Another career-high for Planella was three-pointers made with four. She had previously had single game highs of three. Her three-point shooting was also wonderful as she finished the game making 4-8 attempts.

It was tight, defensive battle throughout the night as neither team could seem find any consistency putting the ball through the hoop. It was 12-11 after the first quarter, 22-22 at halftime, and Jax State held a 34-32 advantage heading into the fourth and final period.

The fourth quarter was a tale of two scoring runs. Utah Valley was eager to begin the fourth as they pounced on a 7-0 scoring run to give them a 41-36 advantage with 6:23 remaining. The Gamecocks called a timeout to end the run and Planella went on a 6-0 scoring run herself as she knocked in two three pointers to help Jax State regain the lead at 42-41 with 4:49 remianing in the fourth.

The Gamecocks could not sustain this momentum however as the Wolverines began knocking in free-throws down the stretch, expanding their lead late. In the game, there were eight lead changes, seven times the game was tied, both teams' biggest leads were five points, and both squads were close in assists and turnovers.

The Gamecocks will move on to host New Orleans on Friday, Dec. 20, at 4:30 p.m. inside the Pete Mathews Coliseum on the campus of Jacksonville State University.
