Jax State’s Upset Attempt Falls Short in Columbia

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Jax State led for over 17 minutes of action on Tuesday before Missouri took a lead with just under six minutes of play and never relinquished the lead, winning 83-72. The Gamecocks led by as many as seven points in the first half and were just a few possessions away from securing their first SEC win in over 70 years.

Jax State falls to 6-5 on the season while the Tigers improve to 10-1 and continue their 10-game win streak.

Jaron Pierre Jr. led Jax State in scoring, putting up 18 points, all coming in the first 21 minutes of action.

Despite the loss, Jax State dominated the glass, out-rebounding Missouri 39-28. Jax State has yet to be out-rebounded this season, with the closest margin coming when the Gamecocks fell even with James Madison on rebounds, 31-31.

Jax State started hot, jumping out to a 7-0 advantage and held the lead for nearly 12 minutes of game time before Mizzou took its first lead of the game at 24-23 with 7:15 left in the first half.

The teams traded the lead four more times before the half, giving Missouri a 41-40 advantage at the break.

Jax State wasted no time regaining the lead, holding a 48-47 edge in just under four minutes of the second half. The Gamecocks led by four points with 9:51 remaining in the contest before the Tigers closed out the game on a 24-to-9 run.

Three Gamecocks finished with a game-high nine rebounds, with Michael Houge, Mason Nicholson, and Pierre finishing one shy of double-digit boards.

Three Jax State players joined Pierre with at least 10 points, led by Jamar Franklin with 15, Jao Ituka with 13 and Houge with 12.

Franklin finished the game 4-of-6 from beyond the arc while Ituka wrapped up his outing a perfect 3-for-3 from three.

Missouri was led by UT Martin transfer Jacob Crews with 19 points. Crews finished 6-for-9 from three.

The Gamecocks return to the hardwood on Saturday, Dec. 21 with a 1 p.m. tipoff against Eastern Kentucky at Berea College in Berea, Ky.
