Jax State geared up for road game against Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. – Jacksonville State women's basketball is set for their second consecutive road game against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers on Saturday. The Gamecocks most recently fell to Missouri 45-79 at their place on Sunday, Dec. 1, while the Chanticleers are coming off an 82-63 home victory over Coker on Wednesday, Nov. 27.

Jax State was downed by SEC foe Missouri on the road in a 45-79 final in Columbia, Mo. The Gamecocks suffered their worst loss of the season in part to shooting only 32.2% from the field and 24% from three. 20 turnovers also doomed Jax State against the Tigers.
Series History
The Gamecocks hold a 3-2 all-time series lead over the Chanticleers. The last time Jax State faced Coastal came last season in Jacksonville when the Gamecocks defeated Coastal 84-72 on Dec. 17, 2023. The first time the two squads faced came back on Dec. 4, 1997, when Jax State won 80-64 in Conway, S.C.
Rhodes Shows Out
In the loss to Missouri, senior forward Bre'Anna Rhodes was the lone Gamecock to score in double figures with 10 points. Rhodes scored her points on an efficient 5-7 makes from the field. Two of Rhodes' best performances came against power conference opponents with her season-high coming at Arizona State in the season opener when she scored a team-best 15 points.
The Clemson Connection
Coastal Carolina head coach Kevin Pederson and Jax State assistant coach Destiny Thomas share similar ties to the state of South Carolina. Both coaches graduated from Clemson and both of them spent time coaching at Anderson University. Pederson was Anderson's head coach from 2001-2005, while Thomas spent time as an assistant there before making the move to Jax State. Thomas is in her second season with the Gamecocks, while Pederson is in his third year at the helm at Coastal.

Jax State's top three scorers this season are all senior forwards. Mya Barnes leads the Gamecocks averaging 10.0 points per game, Rhodes trails her at 9.2 points per game, and Asia Barclay is third at 9.0 points per game. Rhodes and Barclay are tied for a team-best 6.3 rebounds per contest, while Barnes follows with 5.0 boards per game.
