Jax State Tops Furman to Open Weekend

JACKSONVILLE – Domination in singles play led to the third straight win for Jacksonville State's men's tennis team in Saturday's 5-2 victory over Furman. Although they dropped the doubles point, the Gamecocks rebounded in singles play with five individual wins as they downed a perennial Southern Conference power.

The duo of Vanja Dobrnjac and Xavier Sarda Marti tallied a 6-4 win in No. 3 doubles, but Jax State (6-4) relinquished the opening point when Furman (6-6) posted victories in the top two flights.

Fortunately, the Red-and-White wasted little time battling back in one-on-one action. Dobrnjac (6-3, 6-4), Sarda Marti (6-4, 6-1), and Matei Palcau (6-2, 6-4) rolled to quick two-set results. A comeback win on court six by Liam Day (3-6, 6-4, 6-3) clinched the match for Jacksonville State, and Marko Milosavljevic added a three-set triumph (6-3, 6-7 [6-8], 1-0 [10-5]) for good measure.

Saturday's win over the Paladins serves as a revenge victory for Jax State after last Spring's loss at Furman. In the last meeting between the two schools, the Gamecocks fell in a tight match in Greenville, S.C., 4-3, on Feb. 11, 2023.

This weekend's homestand at the Jax State Tennis Courts continues Sunday as Jacksonville State meets defending SoCon regular season champions Chattanooga. First serve in Calhoun County is set for 2 p.m. Admission is free, and fans unable to attend can follow along with the live stats link provided at JaxStateSports.com.
