JACKSONVILLE – Domination from start to finish helped Jacksonville State men's tennis to their fourth consecutive win in Sunday's 6-1 triumph over Chattanooga at the Jax State Tennis Courts. The Gamecocks won the doubles point and never looked back in an all-around performance.
"This was a great weekend from our guys," head coach
Trey Morris said. "Going 2-0 against two quality SoCon teams in Furman and Chattanooga is a great show of the quality and effort our guys have been putting in. Today was all about toughness and being gritty as a team. From start to finish, our guys brought it."
Jax State (7-4) crushed Chattanooga (5-7) in doubles play, leading throughout on each court.
Zach Murphy and
Marko Milosavljevic swept on court two, winning 6-0, and a 6-2 triumph in No. 3 doubles by Vanja Dorbnjac and
Xavier Sarda Marti earned the opening point. The top tandem of
Ivan Marrero Curbelo and
Lucius Soller also held a 5-3 advantage when the doubles point was clinched.
Singles play favored the Gamecocks as well. Dorbnjac rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 result on court three and Marrero Curbelo won the top flight, 6-4, 6-2. A victory in No. 2 singles by
Alin Fatu (7-6 [7-2], 6-1) clinched the match before
Matei Palcau (6-1, 7-6 [7-4]) and Sarda Marti (6-3, 3-6, 7-5) added singles decisions to close it out.
"I'm very pleased with this weekend, but now we need to build on that heading into a very tough match against Kennesaw State," Morris said. "We'll hit the courts on Tuesday to prepare for that and hopefully be able to bring it again on Thursday."
This five-match homestand comes to a close next week as Jax State gets set for a midweek clash at Kennesaw State on Thursday. First serve in Kennesaw, Ga., is set for 1 p.m. between the future Conference USA rivals. Then, next weekend, the squad returns home to host North Alabama at 2 p.m. Saturday and Georgia Southern and Wallace State Community College on Sunday.
