Jax State Offense Stays Hot With Rout of UAB, 14-3

JACKSONVILLE – For the second consecutive night, the Jacksonville State offense exploded for double digit runs with a 14-3 throttling of in-state rival UAB on Wednesday night at Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium.

In the two games during the midweek, Jax State (8-8) hit .415 as a team and accumulated 30 runs on 27 hits in 14 innings. After extinguishing the Hornets of Alabama State in Montgomery, 16-4, on Tuesday, Jax State blistered the Blazers for 13 hits, including three more home runs on Wednesday. The Gamecocks broke open a 5-0 contest with another seven-run inning, highlighted by a grand slam by senior Derrick Jackson, Jr. and a three-run round tripper for sophomore Bear Madliak. Madliak joined junior Logan Walters with three hits each on the night with a double in hir first at bat and added a single in Jax State's four-run second inning.

Walters put together another stellar night offensively with his second three-hit game in consecutive days. The Petal, Mississippi outfielder collected a pair of doubles and an RBI single. Against ASU and UAB, he id 6-for-9 with five RBI. Junior Brennen Norton, who has moved into the No. 3 spot in the Jax State order, connected the Gamecocks' first home run of the night and his second of the week with a three-run dinger in the second inning.

It was another solid effort on the mound for the Gamecocks as Conference USA action is in sight on the docket after the final non-conference weekend of the season. Junior Ethan Adkison started on the mound for the first two innings and was touched for two of UAB's three hits on the night. Junior Colby Morse had the longest stint of any Gamecock reliever in the contest with 2.1 innings of work. He was touched for the final Blazer hit of the evening and earned his first win as a Gamecock.

Sophomore Josh Sibley, freshman Ryan Vermillion and senior Sam Maynard held UAB hitless over the final 2.2 innings.

Even though he was one of two starters held without a hit on Wednesday, sophomore Caleb Johnson extended his on-base streak to all 16 games this season and the last 21 games dating back to the final five games of 2023. Johnson was hit-by-the-pitch in the second inning and was issued a walk in the bog fourth inning. Junior Drew Collins turned in multiple hits with a pair of singles.

Jax State will travel to Carbondale, Illinois for the final non-conference weekend test before CUSA play starts next weekend at Louisiana Tech. The series with Southern Illinois (11-5) will get started on Friday evening at 6 p.m. The series at Itchy Jones Stadium will continue on Saturday at 2 p.m. and wrap up on Sunday with a 1 p.m. first pitch. All three games will be available on the Gamecock Sports Network.
