RUSTON, La. – Gamecock women's tennis scored a big win on the road on Saturday afternoon, topping Conference USA foe Louisiana Tech 5-2. That victory ends a three-game skid for Jacksonville State and serves as a solid opening to the team's Spring Break road trip across Louisiana.
Jax State (6-7) flexed its muscles in doubles play. A dominant 6-2 result at No. 2 doubles by
Irene Artigas and
Serafima Shastova started it off, and
Anna Syrova and
Ella Tuomela combined for a 6-4 win on court three to clinch the opening point.
Though the Bulldogs (10-6) picked up a pair of triumphs in singles action, the Red-and-White still added four one-on-one decisions to win a hard-fought match. Shastova (6-0, 7-5), Artigas (7-6, 6-0), and Tuomela (7-5, 6-2) tallied two-setters in the second, fifth, and sixth flights to win the contest outright and
Dariana Prato (6-3, 2-7, 1-0) posted a three-set classic in tiebreakers to close it out.
Jacksonville State continues its Spring Break road trip tomorrow at UL Monroe. Their showdown with the Warhawks will have a first serve of noon in Monroe, La. Afterwards, the team heads to the Big Easy for a Tuesday afternoon contest at New Orleans beginning at 2 p.m.
