DADE CITY, Fla. – True freshman Ashley Stevenson earned her second top 10 in as many weeks on Tuesday, when her eighth-place finish led the Jacksonville State women's golf team to sixth at the Spring Break Shootout.
Just one week after er first career top-10 finish in the Chris Banister Golf Classic, Stevenson kept her solid play going at her latest tournament. The 54-hole event hosted by Western Kentucky was held on the par-71, 6,063-yard South Course at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club.
The Gamecocks played solid in a 15-team field full of tough competition. After an opening round 285 on Monday morning, they posted back-to-back rounds of 290 to close play and climb into sixth place. The strong finish comes a week after a runner-up finish in their own Chris Banister.
"This week was another good week of golf for us," head coach Robbie Fields said. "From top-to-bottom we had some really strong performances, which is important for our team. We played 15 fantastic holes each day—including today—but the other three really did their damage. We're showing that we have the ability to compete at a very high level, and I believe that each time out we will."
It was the third tournament in as many weeks for Fields' Gamecocks, who have progressively played better golf over that stretch. They have one regular season event remaining before the Conference USA Championship starts on April 15.
"I am proud of this team for what they've done these last three weeks, which I know have been tiring," Fields added. "But they've attacked each opportunity with determination, which makes my job so much fun. We're looking forward to a well-earned break, then one last opportunity to compete and prepare for the conference championship."
Stevenson was steady for Jax State over the two-day Spring Break Shootout. The Fontainebleau, France, native finished the 54-hole tournament with a 2-under-par 211 to lead all Jax State players. She opened the tournament with an even-par 71 on Monday morning and then carded consecutive rounds of 1-under 70 to close.
She was able to counter her bogeys with birdies and avoid big numbers, making 10 birdies and 36 pars over 54 holes. She didn't record a hole over bogey throughout the tournament.
"Ashley continued her incredible play this week," Fields said. "She is simply striking the ball so well and with so much confidence, she makes it look easy. I believe the putts will be falling soon and we'll be in for a treat. I'm so excited for her and all of her hard work, it's a lot of fun to see."
While Stevenson placed in the top 10, the rest of Fields' lineup were right there together, all finishing between 22nd and 38th place in the 81-player field. Junior Paula Perez Cubinas led that group in a tie for 22nd, thanks to rounds of 72-74-73 that gave the Girona, Spain, native a 54-hole score of 219.
Redshirt freshman Rachel Camp was just one shot behind Perez Cubinas and finished in a tie for 26th in the event. Camp, a native of Peachtree City, Ga., played her 54 holes at plus-7 for a 220 after rounds of 71-72-77.
Sophomore Ebby Somers was one shot behind Camp in a tie for 32nd, posting a total score of 221. The native of Valdosta, Ga., opened play with an even-par 71 before rounds of 74 and 76 to close.
True freshman Jinger Heath was also one shot behind her nearest teammate, finishing a stroke behind Somers with a 222 that tied her for 38th. The Decatur, Ala., native closed strong, following rounds of 75 and 76 on Monday to shoot a Tuesday 71 and climb 23 spots up the final-round leaderboard.
The Gamecocks' final non-conference tournament will be East Carolina's Ironwood Invitational on April 1-2 on the Ironwood Golf & Country Club in Greenville, N.C.
