JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville State men's tennis team wrapped up its Spring Break trip with a 4-3 setback to former ASUN Conference foe, North Florida, on Wednesday at the UNF Tennis Complex.
The Gamecocks split its pair of matches during the week after blanking UNC Asheville, 4-0, on Monday in Asheville, North Carolina.
In similar fashion to Monday's contest with UNCA, Jax State recorded the first point of the match by claiming the double point. The No. 1 tandem of
Zach Murphy and
Marko Milosavljevic edged UNF's team of Jonas Hartenstein and Rodrigo Crespo, 7-5. The double point came down to a tiebreaker situation at No. 3. The Gamecocks' duo of
Ivan Marrero Curbelo and
Xavier Sarda Marti outlasted the Ospreys' pairing of PJ Kotan and Juan Pablo Cenoz, 7-6 after winning the tiebreaker, 7-4.
With the doubles point secured, Jax State grabbed the first point of singles action at No. 6 with
Liam Day recording a 6-3, 6-2 win over UNF's Breno Marques. The Ospreys equalized with wins at No. 3 and No.2 before the Gamecocks posted a win at No. 1. Jax State's Curbelo won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 to give the Gamecocks the lead before UNF rallied for the final two points.
The final two courts came down to a tiebreaker in the first set and a third set situation. At No. 4, UNF's Cenoz won the first set 7-6 after pocketing the tiebreaker, 9-7 and secured the point in the second set, 6-4. The match-winning point came down to the No. 5 position with Jax State's Milosavljevic and UNF's Nick Scott splitting the first two sets, Scott clinched the match with a 6-3 win in the third-and-deciding set.
The Gamecocks return to action on Sunday at the Jax State Tennis Complex, hosting in-state foe Samford for Senior Day. Jax State will honor its pair of seniors,
Vanja Dobrnjac and
Ivan Marrero Curbelo. Match time is set for 1 p.m. Admission is free to all home matches.
