Gamecocks Take Down Samford On Senior Day

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's tennis team capped off the home schedule in dominating fashion with a 5-2 win over Samford and finished the day with a blanking of Wallace State Community College at the Jax State Tennis Courts.

The Gamecocks honored their two seniors prior to the match - Vanja Dobrnjac and Ivan Marrero Curbelo. Both seniors were key in halting the Bulldogs' seven-match winning streak coming in to Jacksonville. Cubelo made quick work of Samford's Sandeep Mohandoss at the No. 1 singles spot, 6-1, 6-1 to even the match after the Bulldogs claimed the doubles point. Cubelo  also joined with Xavier Sarda Marti at the No. 2 double court, claiming a 6-1 win. Dobrnjac picked up a point for the Gamecocks at No. 2 by dispatching SU's Darcy Nicholls, 6-3, 6-4.

Jax State was dominant at the bottom part of the lineup with wins at No. 4, 5 and 6. Sarda Marti's win in straight sets at No. 5 secured the match for the Gamecocks. He ousted Santiago Arredondo – 7-6, 6-2. Jax State's Marko Milosavljevic posted a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5 over Will Gray. After splitting the first two sets at No. 6, Liam Day downed Samford's Sebastian Harrison, 6-4, in the final set and to collect the fifth team point.

In a rescheduled match with WSCC, the Gamecocks overmatched the Lions, 7-0. All three doubles matches were 6-0 wins by Jax State. The dominance continued into singles play as all six courts were done in straight sets.

Freshman Zach Murphy and Matei Palcau each blanked their foe at No. 2 and 3 respectively – 6-0, 6-0. Junior Logan Haga dispensed WSCC's Brett Foster, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6. Milosavljevic notched his second win of the day over WSCC's Ferran Bonastre – 6-1, 6-2. Redshirt sophomore Lucius Soller collected his second win of the season in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Alin Fatu rounded out the scoring with a 6-4, 6-3 decision.

The Gamecocks will travel to Atlanta, Georgia on Tuesday to face the Panthers of Georgia State. Match time is set for 1:30 p.m. Following the GSU match, Jax State will be idle until Saturday, April 6 at Radford.
