CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Jax State brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the seventh inning, but the late efforts fell short in a 3-1 loss to the Southern Conference Mocs on Wednesday night.
The Gamecocks (10-19) registered seven hits at Chattanooga (18-8), but only senior
Lindsey Richardson's solo home run to open the fourth inning produced a run. Doubles from
Emma Jones-Hubbard,
Morgan Nowakowski and
Hannah Buffington became part of seven Gamecocks left stranded on the bases.
The Mocs took an early lead in the bottom of the first with a run off starter
Sarah Currie who suffered the loss after two innings of work.
Kat Carter tossed the final four frame allowing a pair of runs. Jax State looked poised to quickly respond in the opening innings before inning-ending double plays concluded the first and the second at-bats for the Gamecocks.
Nowakowski and
Kenzie Nicholson each delivered a pair of hits and reached base three times. Freshman
Megan Rasmussen was flung into action for her debut needing to replace
Emma Elrod who left the outfield following a collision in the third frame.
The Gamecocks head home to
Jana McGinnis Field where they will host the first home Conference USA series against Middle Tennessee this weekend beginning on Friday afternoon.
