Gamecock Baseball Falls at Louisiana Tech

RUSTON, La. – Louisiana Tech plated five runs in the first three innings in a 5-1 win on Sunday over Jacksonville State to sweep the Conference USA opening series.

The Bulldogs swept a Saturday twinbill with the use of seven home runs balls and scoring 13 of the combined 21 runs off the long ball at J.C. Love Field at Oat Patterson Park. On Sunday, LA Tech manufactured runs by scoring four of its first five runs with two outs in an inning. LA Tech struck first again like it did in the previous two outings of the weekend, with three runs in the first inning. LA Tech expanded the lead with two more runs with two outs in the third inning.

After the 5-0 start through three innings, junior Austin Cornelius settled in over the next three frames to keep the Bulldogs from expanding the lead. After the third inning, Cornelius retired LA Tech in order twice over his final three innings, but suffered the loss on Sunday.

Jax State struggled to convert with runners on the base paths throughout the weekend as it stranded six runners on the bases in the setback. The Gamecocks' lone run came in fifth after a leadoff double from junior Logan Walters. Walters scored on an RBI infield single by sophomore Will Fincher.

Walters and Fincher led the offense with a pair of hits on the day. Walters posted a pair of doubles, while Fincher had the RBI single and added a double in the contest. Junior Brennen Norton capped off a solid first weekend of CUSA play with a two-hit day. On Saturday, he plated five-of-the-eight runs in the first game with a pair of home runs. He had multiple hits in two games over the weekend to give him seven on the season.

Sophomore Caleb Johnson extended his on-base streak to every game this season (23) and has been on base in 28 straight games dating back to the final five games of the 2023 season. After having his 11-game hitting streak snapped in the first game on Saturday, sophomore Bear Madliak still extended his on-base steak to 14 consecutive games. Madliak had a double in the first inning on Sunday.

After playing six-of-the-last-seven games on the road, the Gamecocks will be back on the road against Auburn on Tuesday evening. First pitch from Plainsman Park is set for 6 p.m. It will be streamed on the SEC Network+ and carried on the Gamecock Sports Network. Following the midweek duel in Auburn, Jax State will host Western Kentucky in the first-ever CUSA series on Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium. The series will start on Thursday, March 28.

Tickets for the WKU series are available online at JaxStateSports.com. All Jax State students and fans 18 years old and younger are admitted free.
