JACKSONVILLE – Senior
Emma Jones-Hubbard delivered Jax State's second walk-off home run over Middle Tennessee in as many days to claim the Conference USA weekend series.
The Gamecocks (12-20) move to 2-4 in league play following back-to-back wins, while the visiting Blue Raiders (15-20) drop to 3-6 after their third CUSA series.
Jones-Hubbard dug in with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and sent a 2-1 pitch over the right field fence and off the Gamecocks' videoboard. The walk-off winner, that looked almost identical to her one against North Florida on April 2 last season, came after the Gamecocks let a late 3-1 lead slip away.
Kat Carter battled for her second-straight win in the circle on Sunday. Through seven frames, she allowed just five hits and struck out five MTSU batters. Two of those hits went toward a pair of home runs for MTSU's Ansley Blevins, who later earned a walk in her final at-bat.
Jones-Hubbard's first two-out hit of the day came in the third when she singled back up the middle before stealing second base. From there, a single by freshman
Megan Rasmussen brought Jones-Hubbard home for the tying run after Blevins' first solo shot put the Blue Raiders up 1-0 in the second inning. The Gamecocks took the lead when Rasmussen advanced to second on a wild pitch and then raced home on one of senior
Lindsey Richardson's three hits on the day.
Richardson finished 3-for-3 and hit .500 for the weekend series. The only player with more hits and a better average was Rasmussen, who in her first three collegiate starts hit 6-for-10 at the plate with a home run and five RBI. She had five putouts in the outfield and did not commit an error.
After
Makalyn Kyser brought
Morgan Nowakowski home on a sacrifice fly to right in the fourth, MTSU's Blevins lifted her second solo shot out in the fifth inning to cut it back to a one-run game at 3-2. The Raiders added another run to tie in the sixth, but Carter escaped a bases-loaded jam without further damage.
Carter stranded another pair of baserunners in the top of the seventh to keep it a tied game and set the stage for Jones-Hubbard's walk-off heroics in the home half of the inning.
The Gamecocks have a short week before heading out to El Paso on Wednesday for a Thursday-Saturday series with the UTEP Miners.
