Jax State Upends Gardner-Webb For Fourth-Straight Win

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Jacksonville State women's tennis team closed its Spring Break by extending its win streak to four matches with a 5-2 victory at Gardner-Webb on Sunday afternoon.

The Gamecocks (9-7) handed the Bulldogs (5-8) the loss in a match that saw several contests go down to the wire at the Web Tennis Center on the GWU campus. The win closed a perfect spring break for Jax State that started with three wins in the state of Louisiana.

It took a tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles for the Bulldogs to take the doubles point, but Jax State wouldn't allow much more from that point. Irene Artigas and Serafima Shastova won 6-1 at No. 2 doubles before Dariana Prato and Polina Ramenskaja fell in a tiebreaker at No. 1.

Artigas got things started for the Gamecocks in singles play, using a straight-set win (6-3, 6-1) over Katie Watts on Court 4 to even the match at one apiece. Shastova quickly followed on Court 1 with a straight-set win (6-4, 6-1) of her own over Emma Shasteen that gave Jax State a 2-1 lead.

Emilia Roslund evened the match on Court 2 with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Prato, but Martina Zaza answered quickly on Court 6 with a win over Milica Prokic that needed a tiebreaker in the second set. She won the match 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) and put Jax State up 3-2.

Ella Tuomela clinched the match for Jax State on Court 5, thanks to a hard-fought 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 win over Courtney Fyvie. Anna Syrova put the final 5-2 score on the board for the Gamecocks on Court 3 with her 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 win over Alzee Poulin.

The Gamecocks' next scheduled match is on April 5, when they take on New Mexico State in Huntsville, Texas, a couple of days before that wrap up the regular season at Sam Houston.
