MAGNOLIA, Texas – The Jacksonville State women's golf team's first season in Conference USA heads into the postseason, with the Gamecocks set to begin play in the CUSA Championship on Monday.
The Gamecocks will compete in their first CUSA Championship against the other six programs in the league in a 54-hole, three-day tournament that will be played on the par-72, 6,258-yard High Meadow Ranch Golf Club. The winning team and winning individual in the stroke play event will receive CUSA's automatic bid into the NCAA Regionals.
The event should be a competitive one, with all seven teams ranked inside of the top 160 in the latest rankings. Ranked No. 132, the Gamecocks will start in the middle of the pack and look to work their way up over the course of the tournament.
Western Kentucky will be the top seed at No. 64, while No. 71 Sam Houston and No. 77 New Mexico State are higher ranked teams that Jax State will be chasing this week. UTEP (No. 150), Middle Tennessee (No. 154) and FIU (No. 157) will round out the field.
The Gamecocks will be paired with New Mexico State in Monday's first round and will tee off on High Meadow Ranch's par-4, 328-yard first hole beginning at 8:15 a.m. CT.
Jax State will turn to its three freshmen at the top of the lineup on Monday, starting with true freshmen Jinger Heath at No. 1 and Ashley Stevenson at No. 2. Redshirt freshman Rachel Camp will play in the third spot for head coach Robbie Fields, while junior and veteran Paula Perez Cubinas will be the No. 4 player and sophomore Ebby Somers No. 5. Redshirt freshman Sandra Menes will be available as a substitute if needed.
Heath enters the week as the highest ranked Gamecock and with a team-best 491-181-24 record against her opposition this season. The native of Decatur, Ala., holds a 73.9 adjusted stroke average after finishing third in a field of 90 players in the Gamecocks' last event at the ECU Ironwood Invitational. She has one win and three top 10's in her first season.
Stevenson, a native on Fontainbleau, France, has climbed nearly 300 spots in the national rankings since the start of the spring semester. She has been playing her best golf of late, claiming three-straight top-10 finishes, including a second-place finish at Jax State's Chris Banister Golf Classic. Her last time out was a seventh place finish in a 90-player field at ECU.
Camp looks to get back to the top of the leaderboard in the CUSA Championship, a place she found herself just three events prior to this week. At the Chris Banister, the Peachtree City, Ga., native claimed her first career top 10 with a ninth-place finish on her home course.
The two players with conference championship experience will round out the Jax State lineup, starting with Perez Cubinas in the No. 4 spot. The Girona, Spain, native has been in contention on the conference stage before, holding the lead for much of the first round of the ASUN Championship two years ago.
Somers has also competed in the conference championship, doing so as a freshman in the ASUN Championship last season. The Valdosta, Ga., native looks to finish her second season at Jax State with another top-10 finish and improve upon her above .500 record vs. opposing players.
Menes will be available for Fields to turn to should a substitution be needed. The transfer from Georgia Southern joined Jax State midway through this season and made her debut as an individual just two events ago at Western Kentucky's Spring Break Shootout after working back from an injury.
