JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Sam Houston in Conference USA action at the Jax State Soccer Complex.
The Bearkats recorded a goal in each half to collect a road win in the league and improve to 2-0-0 in CUSA and 5-3-2 on the season. The Gamecocks fell to 0-2-0 in CUSA play and 5-6-0 overall.
SHSU converted on a pair of set plays for both goals. The first goal came off a yellow card that was issued to a Gamecock in the 43rd minute. Savannah Knight finished off the play with a header into the back of the net after a service in from Kaylee Dressback. The Bearkats added an insurance goal off of a corner kick opportunity as Landri Townsend connected in to the back of the net in the 82nd minute.
Jax State controlled the possession and finished with a 12-8 advantage in shot attempts but were unable to equalize before the late goal by SHSU. The Gamecocks produced eight-of-their-12 shots in the final 45 minutes. Graduate
Melissa Kuya Strobel finished with a match-high four shots.
"If you look at how we played the game, it was just one or two moments that hurt us and we have to get better at handling the set pieces," said head coach Sean Fraser.
After the SHSU match was moved to Friday due to the weather, it will be a quick turnaround for Jax State. The Gamecocks wrap up a busy week with a Sunday match against CUSA foe Louisiana Tech. Match time is set for 1 p.m. Admission is free to all home matches. The contest will be streamed on ESPN+.
LA Tech and Kennesaw State were able to squeeze in their match on Thursday as the two sides played to a a scoreless draw.
