CORPUS CHRISTI, TX. – Jacksonville State won in four sets over former ASUN rival North Florida on Saturday in the final match of the Islanders Classic.
The Gamecocks (5-1) lost the first set 25-22 to the Ospreys (3-4) before rattling off three straight victories. Jax State took set two 25-19, set three 25-15, and set four 25-14. Jax State had 54 kills, 14 aces, 10 blocks, 51 assists, and 60 digs in the match.
"I was very happy today," head coach
Derek Schroeder said. "I may still be smiling. There was a lot of game planning going on from point to point and we got better and better as the match went on."
Kayla Williams had a season-high 20 kills in the win on a .300 hit percentage. She also made the all-tournament team thanks to her efforts on the weekend.
Sanni Rantanen joined Williams on the all-tournament team. Rantanen had seven kills, a .545 hit percentage, a team-high five service aces, and four blocks.
Ellie Garrett had a double-double against the Ospreys with 38 assists and 11 digs.
Caty Havekost had double figure kills with 10, enough for second-best for the Gamecocks.
Luci Wilkinson led the squad in digs with 18. Wilkinson had the second most aces of the day with four.
Brooklyn Schiffli posted 12 digs.
Jacksonville State will play Chattanooga Tuesday, Sep. 10, at 6 p.m. before heading to Florence for a tournament hosted by North Alabama on Sep. 13-14.
