JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State women's basketball begins Conference USA play hosting their rival and newest CUSA member Kennesaw State on Saturday, Jan. 4. The Gamecocks are coming off a dominate 88-52 win over Life at home on Dec. 30.

Last Time Out
Jax State won their second consecutive home game against Life University to close out the nonconference slate. The Gamecocks downed the Running Eagles 88-52 to improve to 5-1 inside Pete Mathews Coliseum.
Series History
Saturday's matchup against Kennesaw State will mark the 25th all-time meeting between the Owls and Jax State. Jax State holds a 13-11 record against the Owls, including a 9-3 record against them at home. The Gamecocks won the first meeting back on Dec. 1, 1990, at Kennesaw 84-70. The Owls defeated Jax State 82-73 on March 4, 2023, in the ASUN tournament in their most recent showdown.
Gamecocks Showing Out
Jax State will be carrying positive momentum into the CUSA opener after four players scored in double-digits in the win over Life. Maria Sanchez Ponce led the way with 17 points, Bre'Anna Rhodes added 16, Valentina Saric had 12, and Shaquice May had her season-high of 11. On the boards, Asia Barclay paced the Gamecocks with nine rebounds.
Rivalry Renewed
Saturday's game between Kennesaw State and Jax State will be the first time the two teams will square off with both being in the CUSA. The last time the teas faced was in the ASUN Tournament on March 4, 2023, when Kennesaw State defeated the Gamecocks 82-73.
Ballers off the Bench
The Gamecocks are number nine in the country in bench points this season. The squad is averaging 33.7 points per game from nonstarters. The number one team in the country is South Carolina who is averaging 42.9 points per game from their bench.
Clara's Day
In the loss at Utah Valley on Dec. 16, Clara Gonzalez Planella set a new career-high with 19 points. She also made six field goals and four threes which are also new career highs. Planella added another career-high of six rebounds in the loss.

Jax State will host two more conference games next week. The Gamecocks take on Western Kentucky on Thursday, Jan. 9 before facing the preseason CUSA favorites Middle Tennessee on Saturday, Jan. 11.
