Jax State to face WKU in fourth straight home game

JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State women's basketball will face Western Kentucky at home on Thursday in their second Conference USA of the 2024-25 season. The Gamecocks won their first CUSA game against rival Kennesaw State on Jan. 4 at home in 68-56 final.

Last Time Out
Jax State pulled away from Kennesaw State in the fourth quarter to claim their first win in CUSA play this season. The Gamecocks were down two after the third quarter, but a hot shooting fourth period in which Jax State shot 54.55% from the field and 60% from three helped the Red-and-White pull away from the Owls in a 68-56 final. The win also marked the third straight win for Jax State.

Thursday's game against Western Kentucky will be the third time Jax State and the Hilltoppers have faced one another. The Gamecocks are 0-2 all-time against the Hilltoppers. The first meeting took place inside the Pete on Jan. 13, 2024, when WKU defeated Jax State 62-52. The last meeting was at WKU on Feb. 10, 2024, when the Hilltoppers won 54-45.
Dominate Down Low
Jax State's three post players, Bre'Anna Rhodes, Mya Barnes, and Asia Barclay, shined in the win over Kennesaw State on Jan. 4. Rhodes led the way 19 points, Barnes followed with 15 points and led the team with eight rebounds, and Barclay had 10 points.

The Gamecocks are ranked number 10 in the country in average bench points per game. Jax State averages 32.2 points per game from their bench. South Carolina ranks number one in the nation with an average of 42.7 points per game from their bench.
Fighting Through It
Jax State has been shorthanded over the past two games against Life and Kennesaw State. Clara Gonzalez Planella has been recovering from injury, while Eden Sample missed the game against life due to illness, and Valentina Saric missed the Kennesaw game also due to illness. Even with being shorthanded, Jax State went 2-0 in those games.

Jax State will continue the early portion of the CUSA schedule with a showdown against preseason conference champion favorite Middle Tennessee on Saturday, Jan. 11, at home. The game against MTSU will mark the end of a five-game homestand for the Gamecocks.
