House, Nicholson Shine in CUSA Win Over Western Kentucky

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Mason Nicholson and Quel'Ron House racked up the career numbers on Thursday as Jax State toppled Western Kentucky 73-67 for its first Conference USA win of the season in Bowling Green.

House, a Kentucky native, flirted with a triple double in the first start of his career, setting new career highs in all three major categories with 14 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Nicholson reached the 20-point mark for the first time in his career, also pouring on 12 rebounds.

Jax State improves to 9-6 (1-1 CUSA) on the season while the Hilltoppers move to 10-6 (1-2 CUSA).

House felt right at home to open up the game, tallying eight points and two assists in just the first six minutes of action. Nicholson entered the halftime break with six points and six rebounds.

A defensive first half ended with Western Kentucky boasting a 27-24 advantage at home. Enoch Kalambay led the Hilltoppers with 12 first half points.

The Gamecocks found their groove in the second half, rattling off 49 second half points, including 14 from Nicholson. The Gamecock's center finished with the sixth double-double of his career.

Jax State shot 17-for-30 from the field in the second half with Nicholson and Jao Ituka combining to shoot 10-for-11.

Jax State overcame shooting woes in the victory, shooting just 3-for-20 from beyond the arc, the lowest amount of makes this season. Despite the poor shooting, Jax State out-rebounded the Hilltoppers 50-30.

Five Gamecocks finished the game in double figures, with Jaron Pierre Jr. (12), Ituka (10) and Koree Cotton (10) joining House and Nicholson.

Nicholson and House also led the way on the glass as Marcellus Brigham Jr. (8), Michael Houge (7) and Cotton (6) clocked out not far behind the pair.

The Gamecocks conclude their three-game CUSA road trip at Middle Tennessee on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 5 p.m.
