KENNESAW, Ga. – Jax State volleyball dropped their Saturday afternoon match to Kennesaw State by a score of 3-0.
Kennesaw won the match thanks to a 25-21 first set win, 25-18 second set, and a 25-20 third set.
Kayla Williams was the Gamecocks' offensive leader with 10 kills.
Izzy Whittaker followed Williams with seven kills.
Charlee Solomon had a team-high 25 assists.
Luci Wilkinson, Solomon, and Williams tied for a team-best two service aces. Wilkinson and Solomon also tied for a team-high four digs.
The Gamecocks tallied 31 kills, seven aces, two blocks, 27 assists, and 17 digs in the match.
In the first set, a kill by
Sanni Rantanen made it 4-3 early before Kennesaw went on a 4-0 scoring run to extend their lead to 8-3. A service ace by Williams and a setting error by the Owls tied the set at 11-11 later. Kennesaw was up 21-17 when a Williams kill sparked a 3-0 run by Jax State to make it 21-20 Owls. Kennesaw closed out the first on a 4-1 run.
Early in the second, the Owls and Gamecocks were battling as they were tied 5-5. Kennesaw scored four-straight to make it 9-5 before Jax State got back in it with back-to-back scores making it 9-7. Rantanen helped the Gamecocks score three-straight to make it 11-10. Kennesaw went up 20-15 before Whittaker put down a kill to make it 20-16. With the owls up 23-16, Rantanen got a kill and service ace to make it 23-18. Kennesaw then took the set after a pair of kills.
In the third set,
Amaya Tolentino scored a kill, then Wilkinson scored an ace to help the Gamecocks go up 4-3 early.
D'Yanna Spicer put down a kill to make it 11-9 Kennesaw before the Owls scored two points in a row. With the Gamecocks trailing 18-12, Williams put down a kill making it 18-13. Later, Jax State scored three-straight capped by an ace by Solomon to put the Gamecocks within three. Whittaker earned the Gamecocks final point of the match to make it 24-20 before the Owls closed out the match with a third set win.
Jax State returns to Pete Mathews Coliseum Friday, Oct. 24, and Saturday, Oct. 25, to face Sam Houston. The match on Oct. 24 will be the Gamecocks' Mental Health Awareness match, while Senior Day is on Oct. 25.
