MIAMI, Fla. – Jax State's volleyball season came to an end Friday night in the quarterfinals of the CUSA Tournament in a 3-0 loss to Kennesaw State.
In the final match of the season,
Kayla Williams did what she has done all season and that is lead the Gamecocks' offense. Williams tallied 12 kills against the Owls.
Sanni Rantanen and
Amaya Tolentino followed Williams, adding eight kills apiece. Also offensively,
Charlee Solomon led Jax State with 31 assists.
Defensively,
Luci Wilkinson had a team-best 12 digs. Williams added six digs and Solomon had four, respectively. Rantanen had a team-high three total blocks, while Williams and
D'Yanna Spicer both downed two total blocks. As a team, Jax State had 35 kills, 34 assists, 30 digs, six blocks, and four aces against the Owls.
In the first set, Jax State and Kennesaw State battled back-and-forth before the Gamecocks scored two-straight to take a 15-14 advantage into the media break. Kennesaw scored four in a row to jump in front 21-17. Jax State cut it to 22-19 late thanks to a Williams kill. Tolentino downed the final kill for the Red-and-White to make it 23-20 Kennesaw. The Owls took the opening set 25-20.
The second set started much like the first with both teams exchanging scores before Kennesaw went on an 8-3 run to go up 18-12. The run was too much for Jax State to overcome as Kennesaw eventually took the second set 25-17.
In the third set, Jax State went up 9-7 thanks to a quick 3-0 run. Kennesaw took a 12-11 lead before a Rantanen kill tied it up. The Gamecocks later scored three-straight capped by a Wilkinson ace to take a 17-15 advantage. Kennesaw responded with a 7-0 run to go up 22-17. Jax State made a late push with a 3-0 run to cut the Owls' lead to 24-22 before Kennesaw clinched the match 25-22.
