Women's Basketball Returns Home To Face Mercer Saturday

JACKSONVILLE – Jax State women's basketball hosts Mercer Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. inside Pete Mathews Coliseum. The game against Mercer is the first of three-straight home games for the Gamecocks.

Last Time Out
Jax State played a pair of games in Pacific's Tiger Turkey Tip-Off on Nov. 28 and Nov. 29. The Gamecocks fell 69-59 to UC Davis on Nov. 28, before losing 70-63 to hosting Pacific on Nov. 29. In the game against UC Davis, Jax State trailed by 23 entering the fourth quarter. The Gamecocks outscored the Aggies 21-10 in the final 10 minutes. Against Pacific, Jax State had four players score in double-figures with Adriana Jones leading the way pouring in 15 point
 
Djurdjevic's Breakout Weekend
Freshman forward Mina Djurdjevic had a terrific weekend at the Tiger Turkey Tip-Off. Against UC Davis, Djurdjevic had a career-best 17 points and 6 rebounds. Against Pacific, Djurdjevic scored 10 points and grabbed four boards.
 
Next Man Up
In the Tiger Turkey Tip-Off hosted by Pacific, Jax State dealt with unfortunate inury luck. Freshman Mearah Whitehead, freshman Abril Ricart-Mensah, and sophomore Masa Buzic have missed multiple games this season. Mya Barnes missed the UC Davis game with an injury suffered in practice. Barnes returned against Pacific, but Maria Sanchez-Ponce missed the contest after suffering an injury the day prior against UC Davis.
 
Thornsbury Dishes Dimes
In the season opener against LaGrange, Kyera Thornsbury had a career-best eight assists to zero turnovers. Against New Orleans, Thornsbury added seven assists to zero turnovers to lead the way for Jax State. In the game against Pacific, Thornsbury led the Gamecocks with four assists.
 
Barnes Preseason Honors
Senior forward Mya Barnes was selected to the 2025-26 Preseason All-CUSA Team. Barnes averaged 7.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks on 27.8 minutes per game last season. Barnes' 1.2 blocks per game and 35 total blocks ranked her fifth in the league in both categories last season.
 
Jones Scores 26
In Jax State's last home contest, Jones led the Gamecocks with 26 points. Jones' 26 points against Southern Miss was only the third time in the last five years that a Jax State player has scored 25 or more points in a contest. Kennedy Gavin scored 27 against Kennesaw State on Jan. 19, 2023, and Rachel Johnson scored 25 against FIU on Feb. 24, 2024.
 
Series History
The Gamecocks and Bears are longtime foes but will be facing off for the first time since the 2015-16 season. Mercer has a 14-9 all-time record against Jax State. The Bears won the inaugural matchup 102-61 on Jan. 9, 1985, in Jacksonville. Most recently, Mercer won 46-39 in Macon, Ga., on Dec. 21, 2015.
