Jax State’s Winning Streak Snapped at Sam Houston

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Jax State's eight-game winning streak came to an end on Thursday as Sam Houston pulled off a 66-61 win over the Gamecocks in Huntsville, Texas. Jax State turned the ball over 15 times for just the fourth time this season in the loss.

Jax State falls to 17-8 (9-3 CUSA) on the season while the Bearkats improve to 9-16 (2-10 CUSA). Despite the loss, Jax State remains in sole possession first place of Conference USA

Leading 58-52 with 6:22 remaining, Jax State surrendered a 14-3 run over the final 6:21 as the last-place Bearkats toppled the first-place Gamecocks.

The two squads found themselves in a physical battle, combining for just 58 points in the first half, heading into the halftime break knotted at 29-29.

Jaron Pierre exploded for 19 second-half points, including a game-tying three pointer with just 58 seconds remaining in the contest. Sam Houston would knock down five free throws in the final minute of the game to pull away and win 66-61.

Pierre led the way for Jax State, pouring on 21 points, the 17th time he has finished with 20+ points this season. Jao Ituka was the only other Gamecock in double-figures with 10.

Jax State finished with a season-low in assists, only netting four dimes in the loss, the previous season-low was eight, done three times prior this year. Mason Nicholson led Jax State with 10 boards while Pierre was not far behind with nine of his own.

Turnovers handicapped the Gamecocks in the first of two road games, with Jax State turning the ball over 15 times, allowing Sam Houston 15 points off turnovers.

Despite the loss, Jax State out-rebounded the Bearkats 33-31, including a 7-4 advantage on the offensive glass. The defeat featured eight ties and 13 lead changes.

The Gamecocks complete their weekend road trip on Saturday at Louisiana Tech with a 3 p.m. tipoff.
