STATESBORO, GA. – Gamecocks men's tennis lost their first match of the season Friday in a 4-3 final at Georgia Southern. The difference in the match came early on when the Eagles took the doubles point. The Gamecocks were able to take three wins in singles.
Jax State is now 3-1 on the year after their first loss, while Georgia Southern improves to 4-4.
Timo De Visser and
Charlie Penman's doubles match on court two completed first. Aaron James Williams and Laurent Julia Calac defeated the Gamecocks' duo 6-2 to open the match.
Matei Palcau and
David Krasner were then downed by Pierre Mouesca and Matthew Mitchell, 6-1, to claim the doubles win for the Eagles.
De Visser, Krasner, and Palcau all got wins in singles play for the Gamecocks. De Visser defeated Williams in three sets thanks to winning the first and third sets. De Visser won set one 6-3, lost set two 3-6, and then closed out the third set in a tiebreaker. Krasner and Calac went to three sets as well in their singles match. Krasner won set one 6-2, lost the second 1-6, and then took set three 6-1.
Palcau downed Mitchell in three sets as well. Palcau took the first set 6-3 before Mitchell won the second 4-6. In the match clinching third set, it came down to a tiebreaker that Palcau was able to win.
On the other courts,
Marko Milosavljevic fell in two sets to Pol del Castillo, Penman lost in two sets to Mouesca, and
Aman Dahiya lost in two sets to Dimitris Paliouras. The final court to complete singles action was Palcau's win on court six, while the first one to be completed was Milosavljevic's loss on court three.
The Gamecocks will now move on to face Stetson Saturday afternoon in a 1 p.m. first serve in Statesboro. Stetson will turn around to play hosting Georgia Southern on Sunday.
