COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. – Jacksonville State's men's tennis team took on Air Force Friday in a match that resulted in the Falcons defeating the Gamecocks 5-2. The Gamecocks were beaten in doubles play but were able to grab a pair of wins in singles.
In doubles, Phillip Deaton and Tyler Leaird of Air Force overtook
Marko Milosavljevic and
David Krasner 6-4 in the day's first completed match.
Lucius Soller and
Zach Murphy were able to answer the Falcons' initial win on court one with a 6-4 triumph over AJ Moore and Langdon Tingleaf. Air Force clinched the doubles point thanks to Arjun Kersten and Matthew Staton's 7-6 final over
Timo De Visser and
Logan Haga on doubles court three.
De Visser tied the match at one point apiece after his singles victory over Deaton in straight-sets on court one by scores of 6-2 in set one and 6-4 in the second. Milosavljevic then put the Gamecocks ahead 2-1 with a three-set win over Kersten. Milosavljevic dropped the first set 6-2 but tied the match with a 6-1 win in the second. In the match clinching third, Milosavljevic came out on top 7-6 in a tiebreaker.
After the first two wins by Jax State, Air Force tied the match when Moore beat
Charlie Penman in three-sets on court three. Penman lost the first set 6-4, took the second set by a score of 6-3, but eventually fell in the third 6-3.
Matei Palcau lost on court five in two-sets to Staton 6-2, 6-4. Krasner and Alec Fritzinger finished a highly competitive match on court four with Fritzinger getting the edge thanks to a tiebreaker in set three. Krasner won set one 7-5, lost set two 7-5, and lost the third 7-6.
The final match of the day concluded on court six with Murphy and Tingleaf playing another tight match that came down to a tiebreaker in the third set. Tingleaf won the first set 6-4, before Murphy got the advantage by the same score in the second set. In set three, Tingleaf came out on top 10-4.
Jax State now holds a 3-2 record, while Air Force improves to 6-5 on the season.
The Gamecocks move on to face Utah State in a neutral site match Saturday at Denver University. The match between the Red-and-White and the Aggies is set for a 1:30 p.m. central start. Links to the match's live stream and live stats are available at JaxStateSports.com.
