JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State women's tennis bounced back from a loss at Georgia Southern last Friday with a dominating 6-1 home victory over Florida A&M Saturday afternoon. The Gamecocks took the doubles point to start the day, then clinched the team win in singles.
The Gamecocks improved to 4-2 on the year with the win over the Rattlers. Meanwhile, Florida A&M falls to 0-6.
Two new doubles teams made their debut against the Rattlers fort he Red-and-White.
Anna Syrova teamed up with
Zuzana Pavelekova for their first win of the year as a doubles pairing. They defeated FAMU's Sara Rakim and Genesis Whitelock 6-2. The duo of
Lea Erenda and
Ava Thomason also debuted with a win. Erenda and Thomason beat Susan Salinas and Larissa Silva 7-5 to take the doubles point for the Gamecocks.
Irene Artigas and
Aneka Patel lost their doubles match 6-2 to Reagan Harris and Veronica Rodirguez.
In singles play,
Polina Ramenskaja fell in tiebreakers in the third set of her match with Rakim to give the Rattlers their lone team point of the day. Four Gamecocks took straight-set wins in singles. Erenda impressed in a 6-4, 6-1 win over Rodriguez. Syrova was lights out on her court winning both set one and two by a score of 6-0. Artigas won over Silva 6-2 in both sets of her victory.
Patel won her match to secure the quality team effort for the Gamecocks. Patel lost the first set to Salinas of FAMU 6-3. She bounced back for a 6-2 win in the second sending the match into a tiebreaking third set which went the way of Patel and Jax State.
The Gamecocks will move on to play North Alabama on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 12 p.m. The match between the in-state rivals will be played in Florence, Al.
