Gamecocks Rout No. 21 Troy; Jax State Tosses One-Hitter

JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State tossed a one-hitter and pounded out 13 hits in an 11-1, run-rule rout of No. 21 Troy on Tuesday night on Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium.

The win snapped a four-game losing streak to nationally ranked clubs as the Trojans were the third straight ranked team that the Gamecocks have faced consecutively.

Jax State's trio of pitchers accumulated nine strikeouts and worked themselves out of jams throughout the contest with seven walks issued. Starter James Wilson turned in career numbers with 4.2 innings of work and recorded six of the nine strikeouts. Junior Joe Scarborough finished off the fifth and limited Troy to the one run in the fifth inning and tossed the sixth. He fanned a pair of Trojans. Sophomore Ryan Geraghty tossed a clean seventh inning with one strikeout. The Trojans stranded nine base runners in the loss.

The Gamecocks' offense started fast and gave the pitching staff a lead to work with. Jax State plated three runs in the first inning, highlighted by execution of the small ball game and key hit from junior Carson Hornung. Senior Drew Collins started the game with a double, followed by a bunt single from junior Colton Hegwood. Collins swiped home on a double steal, while redshirt sophomore Cooper Blauser had an RBI on a sacrifice bunt.

Junior Grayson Ashe started the two-run second inning with a one-out solo blast that traveled 413 feet over the left field fence. Junior Caleb Johnson delivered an RBI double for the second run of the inning.

After Troy tallied its lone run in the fifth, Jax State got that run back with an RBI single by Collins. He finished the night 3-for-4 and scored a pair of runs. He has now reached base in 35-of-the-last 37 games.

Jax State put the game away with five runs in the seventh inning, with the game-ending hit coming from freshman Matthew Cash, who doubled to left field with the bases full of Gamecocks. It's the second walk-off hit by the freshman from Centreville, Ala.

With his hit and a walk on Tuesday, Hegwood has reached base in all 16 games that he has played in. Blauser extended his on-base streak to 17 games with a triple and a walk. Blauser's triple was the 12th of the season for Jax State, which takes over the national lead in that category. It was Blauser's third triple of the season. Johnson and sophomore Sam Silas had multi-hit games with two hits apiece.

Jax State's tune up weekend ahead of Conference USA play will be against former Ohio Valley Conference rival Southeast Missouri this weekend on Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium. Head coach Steve Bieser will face his alma mater and former program when the Redhawks visit Jacksonville this weekend. The series begins on Friday at 6 p.m. followed by a 6 p.m. start on Saturday. The series concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m.
