
Women's Basketball Ends the Regular Season at Kennesaw State

KENNESAW, GA. – Jacksonville State women's basketball concludes the 2024-25 regular season with a trip to Kennesaw State. The Gamecocks and Owls will bookend the Conference USA slate as they started league play against one another and are now ending the year with a matchup.

Jax State lost 74-72 to Florida International in the final home game of the season on Saturday, March 1. The Gamecocks had a shot to tie as time expired, but the ball did not find the bottom of the net leading to the Panthers escaping Pete Mathews Coliseum with a road victory.

Jax State has an 8-9 record against the Owls. The Gamecocks one the first contest 92-87 on Dec. 5, 2005, inside the Pete. Most recently, Jax State took a 68-56 home win over Kennesaw on Jan. 4, 2025, in the first CUSA game of the season and Kennesaw's first ever league game as member of the conference.
Maria's Moment
Maria Sanchez Ponce tied her career best last Saturday against FIU. Ponce scored 20 points in 32 minutes of action on 8-17 shooting. Her impressive performance against the Panthers followed a 14-point outing on an efficient 4-7 shooting night against Liberty on Thursday, Feb. 27. Ponce is averaging a team-high 10.0 points in league play.
Clara Coming Along
Clara Gonzalez Planella had two nice games last week to compliment Ponce's performances. Planella added 10 points against Liberty and 13 points against FIU. Planella has averaged 9.4 points per game in conference play.
Team Defense
Jax State currently ranks fifth in the CUSA in opponent field goal percentage as they only allow 40.6% of their opponent's shots to go in. The Gamecocks' three-point defense is even better. Jax State ranks first in the CUSA in opponent three-point field goal percentage allowing only 27.5% of opponent threes to fall. The Gamecocks only allow 60.3 points per game, enough for third in the league.
Raining Threes
Jax State ranks first in the CUSA in total threes and average threes made per game. The Gamecocks have knocked down 230 threes for an average of 8.2 threes made per game.
Scouting the Owls
Kennesaw lost a tight one at home last Saturday against Liberty in a 71-69 final. Prencis Harden is third in the CUSA in scoring at 15.9 points per game. Harden averages a double-double thanks to adding 10.4 rebounds per game. Keyarah Berry and Carly Hooks also average double figures in scoring. Berry averages 11.9 points, while Hooks averages 10.3 points, respectively. Hooks leads the Owls with 83 assists on the season.

Jax State will move on to the 2025 Conference USA Tournament next week. The tournament will be held on March 11-15 at the Propst Arena in Huntsville, Ala.
