Women's Basketball Loses Season Finale at Kennesaw State

KENNESAW, GA. – Jacksonville State's women's basketball squad fell 63-55 in their final regular season game of the year at Kennesaw State on Saturday afternoon. The Gamecocks carried a five-point advantage into the final quarter, but the Owls were able to rally back for the win on their home court.
 
Jax State ends the 2024-25 regular season with a 10-19 record and 4-14 in Conference USA play. Kennesaw State finishes at 12-17 overall and 7-11 in league action.
 
Two Gamecocks reached double-figure scoring against the Owls. Bre'Anna Rhodes led the team with 12 points while battling foul trouble. Rhodes ended the game with four fouls. Samiya Steele followed Rhodes with 11 points on 4-6 shooting from the field and 2-3 from three-point range. Steele led the team in assists with four.
 
Asia Barclay led the Red-and-White with eight rebounds, while Mya Barnes followed closely with seven boards, respectively.
 
Kennesaw jumped out on top 8-2 early before the Gamecocks came storming back to take a 12-8 lead thanks to an Elsie Harris layup before the first quarter's media timeout. By the end of the first, Jax State was up 16-13.
 
Steele made a three early in the second to put the Gamecocks ahead 19-13. She then scored back-to-back baskets to make it 23-16 with 4:50 remaining in the first half. The Owls went on an 8-0 scoring run to get back ahead 24-23 with 2:34 left in the second. After a Kennesaw State layup, Rhodes knocked down two free throws to make it 28-26 Owls at halftime.
 
The Owls got ahead 31-27 early in the third before Planella made a three to make it 31-30 with 7:52 left in the period. Eden Sample made a pair of free throws to give Jax State the lead again at 34-33 with 5:45 left in the third. Later in the quarter, Maria Sanchez Ponce drained a three to extend the advantage 43-39. By the end of the third, Jax State led 44-39.
 
By the fourth quarter's media timeout, Kennesaw had retaken the lead 50-47. Planella drilled a three with 3:37 left in the game to make it 56-52 Kennesaw. Steele then answered an Owls bucket with another three to make it 58-55 Owls with 2:53 to play. Kennesaw responded with a pair of baskets to ice the game.
 
Jax State will now await seeding for the 2025 CUSA Tournament next week in Huntsville, Ala. The tournament will be held March 11-15 at the Propst Arena.
