LYNCHBURG, VA. – Jacksonville State women's tennis's season came to a close Thursday morning in the quarterfinal round of the Conference USA Championship Tournament. The Gamecocks fell 4-0 to the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders.
Middle Tennessee took the doubles point, then swept three courts in singles to defeat Jax State and make it to the semifinals.
Polina Ramenskaja and
Lea Erenda's doubles match on court one against Lena Peyer and Eloise Swarbrick was the first completed match of the day with MTSU's Peyer and Swarbrick winning 6-3. Ilaria Sposetti and Cassidy Mataia then beat
Irene Artigas and
Ella Tuomela on court three 6-4 to take the doubles point.
On doubles court two,
Zuzana Pavelekova and
Anna Syrova were tied 4-4 with Alessia Truden and Rutuja Chaphalkar when the match was abandoned.
In singles, Erenda lost 6-2 in both the first and second sets to Sposetti to give the Blue Raiders a 2-0 advantage. In the number one singles slot, Truden beat Syrova 6-3 and 6-2 to get within one match victory of defeating Jax State. Artigas's singles match against Mataia was the match clinching win for MTSU. Artigas fell 6-4, 6-2.
Pavelekova dropped the first set of her match against Peyer on court three by a score of 6-3. Pavelekova responded with a 6-1 win in the second. Peyer led 4-1 in the third before the match was abandoned. On court five, Ramenskaja won a tight 7-6 (0-0) first set against Chaphalkar before Chaphalkar led 3-0 in the unfinished second set.
Finally, Tuomela won her first set against Zenn Lim in a competitive 7-5 outcome. Tuomela was ahead 1-0 in the second when the match was called.
The Gamecocks closed out the season with a 10-8 mark this spring.
