Baseball Drops Final Game at New Mexico State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Jacksonville State dropped the final game of the Conference USA weekend series to New Mexico State, 7-6, on Saturday at NM State's Presley Askew Field.

The Gamecocks claimed the weekend series after winning on Thursday night 17-10, followed by a 6-1 victory on Friday night. Jax State was one out away from sweeping its first CUSA series, but a bases-loaded single gave the Aggies the win.

It was late-game, two-out heroics for both clubs as Jax State erased a 4-3 deficit with two outs in the top of the ninth. Cooper Blauser drilled his second double of the contest with one out in the final plate appearance and scored on Ace Williamson's RBI single to right field. Grayson Ashe capped off his weekend with a go-ahead two -run home run to give the Gamecocks a two-run lead.

Ashe feasted off Aggie pitching in the three games against them with a .462 average at the plate, including three home runs and a double on the weekend, He delivered eight RBI and scored five runs.

The Aggies heroics started with a leadoff walk, which scored on a sacrifice fly. NM State was issued three more walks, including one intentional free pass with two outs. NMSU's Bryce Campbell lifted the Aggies to the win with an RBI single to left field.

Jax State's Joe Scarborough was saddled with the loss. NM State's Ferney Barreda picked up the win after 4.0 innings of work. He posted seven of NM State's 12 strikeouts on the day. The Gamecocks also stranded 10 base runners in the setback.

Blauser led the Gamecocks with a three-hit day.

The Gamecocks return home for a Tuesday night match up with UAB before hosting Sam Houston in a CUSA series next weekend at The Jim. First pitch against the Blazers is set for 6 p.m. Tickets are available at JaxStateSports.com. All Jax State students 18 years old and younger are admitted free.
