MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Tied 3-3 in the top of the seventh,
Kailey Martin rocketed a bases loaded double to score the go-ahead runs and give Jax State a 5-3 advantage in the final frame. With the 5-3 win, Jax State took the series after falling in the first contest.
Jax State (30-18, 12-9 CUSA) defeated Middle Tennessee (22-24, 10-11 CUSA) 12-2 in Friday's contest before clinching the series in Saturday's finale.
Jax State jumped ahead early behind a pair of first inning home runs. For the second time this weekend,
Emma Elrod rocketed a leadoff homer before just two batters later
Amber Reed slugged one of her own.
Elrod's homer was her team-leading 12th of the season while Reed earned her first longball of the year.
MTSU took a run back in the bottom of the first inning with a sacrifice fly to right field.
For the second consecutive game,
MacKinley Portillo got the starting nod for Jax State. Portillo followed up the first inning run by tossing three straight scoreless frames.
Morgan Nowakowski added to the Gamecock lead in the top of the fourth, singling home another runner to give Jax State a 3-1 advantage.
The Blue Raiders however erased the deficit in the fifth inning with a two-run, two-out single to left field. Portillo exited the contest in a tie game after 4.2 innings of work.
Jax State rallied back in the seventh inning, loading the bases with two outs for Martin. The freshman, still leading the team in RBI's, came through and gave Jax State win number 30 on the season.
Kat Carter entered in relief for Portillo in the fifth and shut down the Blue Raider bats for the rest of the contest, throwing 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing just one MTSU base runner.
Reed finished her weekend 6-for-10 with five RBI's and three extra base hits.
Jax State returns to the diamond next weekend with a home series on April 25-27 at Jana McGinnis Field.
