Softball Explodes For 22 Runs Against West Georgia

JACKSONVILLE – Jax State tallied 22 runs in Tuesday's game, the most since 2014, on the way to a dominant 22-1 victory. The 22-run mark was just two runs shy of the Division I program record of 24 runs in a game.

With a win over the Wolves (12-37) on Tuesday, Jax State (34-18) has now won 10 of its last 11 games dating back to April 11.

Morgan Nowakowski opened up the scoring with a double to left center field, scoring Emma Elrod before coming around to cross the plate on a Jaci Underwood single. After two early first inning runs, Jax State exploded for 12 in the second frame.

The Gamecocks strung together eight hits in the second innings to go alongside four walks. Nowakowski started the second round of scoring with a two-run single. 13 consecutive Gamecocks reached base to start the inning before the final three batters of the inning registered an out.

After a scoreless third from Jaliyah Holmes, the Gamecocks tacked on five more runs, aided by a Hannah Buffington home run, her first of the season, in three-run fashion. Buffington's three-run shot came in her final game at Jana McGinnis field after being honored during Sunday's senior day ceremony.

Makalyn Kyser joined Buffington in the homer column in the fourth inning with a solo shot to leadoff the frame. Amber Reed capped off the scoring with a two-out, two-run double, giving the Gamecocks runs number 21 and 22. UWG scored its only run in the top of the fourth.

Jaliyah Holmes started the afternoon for Jax State and earned the win, tossing 3.0 scoreless innings while striking out four and allowing two hits. Amber Reed pitched 1.2 innings while Kat Carter entered the game and recorded the final out of the afternoon.

Nine Gamecocks recorded hits in the ballgame, while five individuals had multiple hits. Jaci Underwood finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBI's.

The Gamecocks will travel to Bowling Green for a three-game series with WKU this weekend before returning to Bowling Green for the CUSA Tournament on May 7-10.
