ATLANTA, Ga. – Jacksonville State saw its four-game midweek win streak come to an end with a 10-7 loss at Georgia State on Tuesday night at the GSU Baseball Complex.'
The loss by the Gamecocks was the first on a Tuesday since a home setback to nationally-ranked Alabama on March 4 on Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium. Since that loss, Jax State strung together wins over a ranked Troy club, Samford, UAB and Alabama State in consecutive Tuesday night outings.
The Gamecocks started fast like they had done in the last four midweek affairs with a four-run first inning. Jax State string together four-of-its-12 hits in the first inning, highlighted by sophomore
Sam Silas' three-run blast over the left field wall. It was the first of his career for Holtville, Alabama native.
GSU responded with a pair of home runs off of starter
Maddox McDougall to trim it to a 4-3 Gamecock lead. Jax State padded the lead in the second inning with an RBI single from
Carson Hornung and an RBI from junior
Ace Williamson.
Hornung extended his on-base streak to 25 games with one of the four hits in the opening inning. He also pushed a hitting streak to six games.
It was another nice start for McDougall as he shook off the three runs in the first inning with 3.0 innings of work in the start. McDougall posted a pair of strikeouts in his third start of the season.
The Panthers erased a 6-4 deficit in the fifth with six runs on just one hit in the inning off the Gamecock bullpen. GSU took full advantage of Jax State's inability to find the strike zone in the inning. The Panthers sent 12 hitters to the plate with five free passes and three hit batters in the inning. The lone hit by the Panthers came after four runs had crossed the plate.
Redshirt sophomore
Cooper Blauser, playing in the shadows of his hometown of Alpharetta, Ga., turned in a two-hit night. Freshman
Matthew Cash led Jax State at the plate with a three-hit night, which was capped off by a solo home run in the eighth inning.
After five games away from its home turf, Jax State returns to Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium this weekend against Conference USA foe Dallas Baptist. The series begins on Friday, April 11 at 6 p.m. The series opener will be Jax State SGA Night at the ballpark. The Gamecocks and Patriots continue the series with another evening battle at 6 p.m. The series will wrap up on Sunday at 12 p.m. The finale of the series was moved up an hour due to DBU's travel schedule.
