JACKSONVILLE – Georgia Tech hit an early three-run homer for a lead and never looked back in a 6-3 defeat of the Jacksonville State softball team on Tuesday afternoon in Jacksonville. The Gamecocks were out-hit 15 to 3 by the ACC opponent.
The Gamecocks (24-17) suffered their fifth loss in the last six games at the hands of the Yellow Jackets (25-15).
Georgia Tech wasted no time taking the first lead of the game on Tuesday, launching a three-run homer with nobody out in the top of the first inning.
Jax State tossed two scoreless innings before the Yellow Jackets tacked on a fourth run in the fourth inning with a sac fly after a pair of singles. The Gamecocks found their way on the board in the bottom half of the fourth when
Makalyn Kyser walked with the bases loaded.
Jax State left the bases loaded in the fourth after suffering a strikeout.
The Gamecocks added a second run in the fifth, cutting the lead down to 4-2 when
Haleigh Cushingberry scored on a ground ball in the infield
Georgia Tech added two more runs in the sixth before Kyser picked up a second RBI, scoring
Jaci Underwood on a single back up the middle in the home half of the frame.
Jax State entered the seventh down 6-3 and picked up a two-out baserunner before a groundout entered the game.
Five Jax State pitchers made an appearance in the game with
MacKinley Portillo and
Jaliyah Holmes each turning in a scoreless outing.
Cushingberry extended her hitting streak to 10 games with a double in the first inning. Her streak is the second longest by any Gamecock this season.
Jax State is set to host Kennesaw State for a three-game series this weekend, beginning on Friday, April 11 at 6 p.m.
