JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State's
Steven Cash turned in a second consecutive gem on the mound to highlight the Gamecocks' 4-0 blanking of Louisiana Tech on Saturday at The Jim.
Cash, who tossed a seven-inning complete game last Sunday at Middle Tennessee, mirrored that outing with seven innings of work and a career-high 10 strikeouts. The 10 strikeouts is the most by a Gamecock pitcher since Isaiah Magwood fanned 11 in a contest against North Alabama in March of 2022.
Over the last two starts, the lefty from Centreville, Alabama, has tossed 14.0 innings, collected 16 strikeouts and touched for seven hits and three earned runs. On Saturday, he limited the Bulldogs to three hits. LA Tech did not get a hit off Cash after a two-out double in the fourth inning.
Jax State's offense used the home run ball for the second consecutive game with senior
Carson Hornung putting the Gamecocks on the scoreboard after lacing a solo home run down the right field line. It was his second in the series after a home run down the left field line in Friday's 4-2 win over LA Tech. Cash nursed the 1-0 advantage until Jax State posted a pair of runs in the seventh inning and added another home run in the eighth inning from redshirt sophomore
Cooper Blauser.
Jax State's two-run seventh was manufactured with a double steal for a run and an RBI single by junior
Brady Thomas.
The two seniors who were honored prior to the delayed start –
Drew Collins and Hornung each had two hits on the day. Cash tipped his cap to the defense behind him with two outstanding catches in left field by Collins to get out of threats by the Bulldogs. Collins extended his on-base streak to 18 games with his two singles.
Junior
Ryan Geraghty finished the final two frames and did not allow a hit. Cash and Geraghty combined to strikeout 13 Bulldogs in the dominating performance. In the first two games of the series, the four Jax State pitchers used –
Jackson Phipps,
Jackson Sleeper, Cash and Geraghty combined for 26 strikeouts and two runs in 18 innings.
Sunday's 2025 home finale will be an early start with impending rain in the area. Jax State and LA Tech will wrap up the series at 10 a.m. on Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium.
Tickets for the Mother's Day morning contest are available at JaxStateSports.com. All Jax State students and fans 18 years old and younger are admitted free. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and carried on the Gamecock Sports Network.
