Soccer Finishes Non-Conference Slate With Shutout Win Over Mercer

Featherstone scores, Jacobs tallies her fourth goal of the week

MACON, Ga. — The Jax State soccer team finished off non-conference play with a 2-0 victory over the Mercer Bears on Sunday afternoon at Betts Stadium in Macon, Ga.

With the victory, the Gamecocks have won five matches in a row. The current streak ties a five-match winning streak from 2012, where the Gamecocks defeated Georgia State, Jackson State, Alabama A&M, Stetson, and LA Tech to improve to 5-1 after dropping the season opener to Middle Tennessee.

In those five victories, the Gamecocks have only conceded a single goal, earning four shutouts in the process.

Jax State will start Conference USA play next weekend with a 6-2-2 record. Mercer falls to 5-3-0 on the season.

Jax State came into the match aggressively by putting up 10 shots in the first 45 minutes of action. Six shots would be on goal, and it would be Louise Featherstone's 13th minute shot that would put the Gamecocks ahead early in the match. Emma Reeder sent a corner kick into a group of players in the box, which Amelia Jacobs gathered and passed to Featherstone, who found the bottom-left corner of the net to score.

Jax State also had five corner kicks to Mercer's one in the first half of play. Ella Holmberg saved Mercer's only shot on goal in the first half.

The score remained at 1-0 until the 71st minute, when Jacobs scored her fourth goal of the week and seventh of the season, heading a long pass from Raegan Whitaker into the net to double the lead over the Bears, which would become the final score.

The Gamecocks kept the edge on shots in the second half with seven shots to Mercer's five, including four shots on goal to Mercer's zero in the second half, bringing the total in the match to 17-10 (10-1) in favor of Jax State.

The Gamecocks open conference play on the road on Sunday, September 21, against Middle Tennessee. Jax State's conference home opener will be on Thursday, September 25, against Missouri State.
