Volleyball wins a pair of matches in Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Jax State volleyball concluded the Chattanooga Classic with a pair of wins on Saturday over Ohio and Chattanooga. The Gamecocks won 3-2 over Ohio, then ended the day with a 3-0 sweep over the hosts.
 
The Gamecocks and Ohio squared off at 11 a.m. Saturday in a match that saw the Gamecocks take advantage of Ohio's mistakes to take the win. The Red-and-White took the first set 25-19. Ohio responded with a 25-23 win in the second set, but Jax State answered with a 25-17 third set victory.
 
Ohio would not go away and took the fourth set 25-23 again. The Gamecocks jumped out in front early in the fifth set and never looked back en route to a 15-10 win to take the match win. Jax State had 61 digs, 45 kills, and 41 assists in the victory over the Bobcats.
 
Against Chattanooga, Jax State dominated the first two sets and claimed the win thanks to a scrappy third set victory. In set one, Jax State The Gamecocks went up 15-10 at the media break and kept the momentum rolling for a 25-19 win. In the second, Jax State went down 6-3 early but a timeout called by the Gamecocks seemed to flip the script for the set.
 
Out of the timeout, Jax State went dug themselves into a deeper hole as the Mocs got up 9-3. However, a pair of 3-0 runs by the Gamecocks put them down one, 11-10. Jax State took their first lead 14-13 and did not let go of it for the remainder of the set. The Gamecocks went on a 7-1 run to put them up 19-14 later in the second. Jax State went on to win 25-16.
 
In the third set, Jax State jumped in front 12-6 and forced a Chattanooga timeout. Later in the set, Chattanooga forced a Gamecock timeout after a 3-0 run to cut the Gamecocks' lead to 20-17. The third remained close, but Jax State was able to keep Chattanooga an arm's length away to take the set 25-22 and end the tournament 2-1.
 
Kayla Williams had another stellar weekend for the Gamecocks. Against Ohio, Williams led the Gamecocks with 13 kills and three aces. Wiliams was even better against Chattanooga with team-best 17 kills on a .286 hitting percentage and eight digs. Williams was named to the 2025 Chattanooga Classic All-Tournament Team thanks to her efforts in all three matches.
 
Charlee Solomon did well against Ohio with 35 assists and continued her output against Ohio with 38 assists. Solomon finished the weekend with 114 assists in the three matches this weekend. Luci Wilkinson had an impressive 32 digs against Ohio and led the team against Chattanooga with 14. Sophia Schweikert was in double-digit kills against the Mocs with 14.
 
Jax State will head to a tournament hosted by Bradley next weekend. The Gamecocks begin play against Bradley Sep. 12. On the same day, Jax State faces Kansas City. Jax State ends the tournament against Central Michigan on Sep. 13.
