Women's Basketball Dominates Kennesaw State On The Road

KENNESAW, Ga. – Jax State women's basketball dominated Kennesaw State on the road Saturday afternoon. The Gamecocks hit a season-high 14 threes in the win.

The Gamecocks were led by Mya Barnes who scored 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting and 2-of-3 from three in 36 minutes of action. Barnes also tallied a team-best 10 rebounds to record her fifith double-double of the season. Makala Hobdy scored 15 on an efficient 6-of-9 shooting and 3-of-3 from deep. Eden Sample and Kyera Thornsbury also scored double-digits as Sample totaled 13 and Thornsbury had 10, respectively.

The Gamecocks offense was lights out as they shot 27-of-56 from the field and 14-of-28 from beyond the arc. Jax State's 14 threes against the Owls were the most by a Gamecock squad since they drilled 20 threes versus Sewanee on Nov. 25, 2024, in a 114-47 win.

The 14 threes against the Owls are tied for fourth most made threes in a single game and tied for third most against an NCAA Division I opponent.

Jax State closed out the first quarter on a 10-4 scoring run capped by a Thornsbury three with 23 seconds on the clock. The Red-and-White led 25-16 after the opening 10 minutes. Djurdjevic nailed a deep three early in the second as the shot-clock expired to extend Jax State's lead to 32-16.

Hobdy hit a three, then Barnes scored a layup with only 24 seconds in the first half to help Jax State hold a 37-22 lead at the break. Out of halftime, Jax State went up 47-28 with 5:25 left in the third thanks to a Hobdy fastbreak layup. Sample made a three to put Jax State in front 52-32 before Kennesaw made it 52-34 heading into the fourth.

Kennesaw got within 17 of Jax State before Thornsbury made another three to get the Gamecocks back up by 20 midway through the fourth. The Gamecocks outscored Kennesaw 7-2 in the final 2:32 of the game to claim the victory.

The road win over the Owls was the first time Jax State has won inside VyStar Arena since a 71-68 triumph on Jan. 27, 2022.

Kennesaw was led by Latazia Williamson who scored 11 points. The Owls also had Shania Nichols score 10 points.

Jax State's defense was just as impressive as their offense as they held Kennesaw to 21-of-62 shooting and 2-of-9 from three. The Gamecocks outrebounded the Owls 41-29.

Jax State returns to Pete Mathews Coliseum on Jan. 22 at 6:30 p.m. to take on New Mexico State before hosting UTEP on Jan. 24 at 1:30 p.m.
