JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – With just two regular season meets remaining on the schedule, the Jax State Cross Country program will get a sneak peek of the postseason, as the Gamecocks travel to Tallahassee, Fla. for the FSU Invitational at Apalachee Regional Park, site of the NCAA South Region Championship, on Friday morning.Â
Â
The men's 8k is set to begin at 7:40 a.m., with the women's 6k to follow at 8:20 a.m. Parking and admission are free for all participating teams and spectators.
Â
Head coach Jeremy Provence and his program enter the weekend well rested after three weeks off, aside from a partial squad competing last weekend at the Georgia Tech Invitational. This will be Jax State's first time competing as a full team since Southern Showcase on Sept. 18.
Â
Provence's squads have remained in the USTFCCCA Regional Rankings as well, with the men's team slotted at No. 11 and the women's unit placing No. 14 in this week's South Region Poll. The men's ranking marks its highest result on the poll in school history.
Â
At the Georgia Tech Invitational, the Gamecocks had 10 total runners compete, with a pair of men's runners placing in the overall top-35, in freshman Thomas Dewey (30th) and sophomore Pai Wynyard (35th). On the women's side, sophomore Maxima Majer (66th) and Madeleine Moss (76th) were the top finishers for Jax State in Douglasville.
Â
With three weeks of rest, the bulk of the Gamecocks' squad will be eagerly anticipating Friday morning's contest after stellar performances at Southern Showcase. One name to watch for Jax State is the two-time Conference USA Men's Freshman of the Week winner Shadrack Kipkurgat who set a program record in the 8k with a 23:32.0 in his last performance in Huntsville.
Â
On the women's side, freshman Mercy Sergon will be racing a 6k for the first time this season after multiple impressive 5k performance thus far. Sergon currently holds the program record in the women's 5k with a 17:08.7 time at the Foothills Invitational to open the season.
Following the FSU Invitational, the Gamecocks will return to Alabama and take a short trip to North Alabama for the Kennemer Classic on Oct. 16 in Florence.
