HOOVER, Ala.—Jax State cruised to an 11-shot win at the Samford Intercollegiate to close out its fall schedule with its first win since February of 2024.
The Gamecocks were even with the hosts after 18 holes on Sunday shooting a 301 as a team but pulled away in the second round with a 289 to go up nine shots with 18 holes to play. During Monday's final round, the Gamecocks added two shots to the advantage.
"I am so incredibly proud of our team for the effort they have put in all Fall which led to the moment we had together this week," said coach Robbie Fields. "They have been determined to get better and compete each week and they have fought through a challenging semester and earned this week."
Lara El Chaib was the individual medalist, winning the tournament by nine shots. The junior posted a three-under round of 68 in the first round, highlighted by a 32 on the back nine, before a 73 in the second. During the third round on Monday, El Chaib was two under, again posting 32 on the back nine.
"Lara has worked so hard since the day she got here and it is so exciting to see her reap the benefits," said Fields. "She was so impressive throughout the week in all aspects, but especially her patience and mental game—which she has dedicated a lot of effort to this Fall. I am so proud of her for the way she competed and dominated this week."
El Chaib led the field in Par 3 scoring at 2.92 and in Par 4 scoring at 4.00. Her 13 birdies also led the field.
Julie Waldo was fifth at 10-over with an even par round of 71 in the second after a 78 in the first. She closed with a 74 on Monday and finished first in the field in pars with 38. Julie Ulvenes Kleppe was a shot behind Waldo with round of 77, 71, and 77.
Caitlin Shippam finished just inside the Top 20 with a 21-over total of 234 (78-74-82) and Sophia Blake rounded out the lineup in a tie for 32nd at 242 (79-78-85).
Tala Clarke competed as an individual and posted 257 (84-86-87).
The Gamecocks will return to action on February 26th in Greensboro, Ga. at the Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational.
"It says a lot about our team that the immediate reaction today was not satisfaction, but a hunger to be better," said Fields. "They understand there is still work to do and that shows the standard they have set this year. I'm excited for them to get some rest and to get a lot of purposeful work in this winter before we tee it up again for the Spring."
