Cash Pitches a Gem, Gamecocks Take Series Over Toledo on Saturday

JACKSONVILLE — Steven Cash turned in his first quality start of the season and recorded his 100th career strikeout in a Jax State 2-1 victory ove the Toledo Rockets on Saturday afternoon at Jim Case Stadium.

Cash only gave up two hits in his six and two-thirds innings of work, not allowing a run to cross and fanning nine batters. His first strikeout of the day was the 100th punch out of his career, tallying 33 at Louisiana and his 67th at Jax State with that strikeout.

Both teams were locked into a pitcher's duel for the first seven innings of the contest, with both teams notching a hit in the third inning, but would not again until the final third of the game.

In the top of the seventh, Toledo hit a double to get a runner into scoring position, but a swinging strikeout and a foul fly ended the threat.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, a lead-off walk from Matthew Cash, followed by back-to-back singles by Trey Majette and Ace Williamson loaded the bases with no outs. Jaxon Pate hit into a fielder's choice to drive Cash home, and an error from the Toledo second baseman brough Majette home to make to 2-0 with three outs remaining.

The Rockets would score a run in the top of the ninth and threaten with runners on, but Skyler Hutto ended the threat to earn his second save of the season.

Despite his stellar outing, Steven Cash did not factor into the decision. Jackson Sleeper earned his second win of the season to improve to 2-1 on the year. Deron Swanson took his first loss of the year.

The Cash brothers combined for three putouts today, with two of the 1-3 variety and one 3-1 putout.

Jax State will go for the sweep on Sunday at 1 p.m.
