Gamecocks Sweep Midweek Series Against Mississippi Valley State

JACKSONVILLE — The Jax State baseball team eared a 7-4 victory over the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils on Wednesday afternoon at Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium.

The victory boosted Jax State to 7-2 overall, winning all but two games in the nine-game season-opening homestand. The Delta Devils fell to 0-6 overall on the season.

Jackson Evers earned the first victory of his Division I career with a scoreless inning and a third of work. Skyler Hutto earned his third save in his third appearance of the season. Gage Deutsch was tagged with his first loss of the season for MVSU.

Caleb Johnson led all Gamecocks offensively by going two-for-three with a run scored and an RBI.

Jax State took to the board in the bottom of the second with an RBI-single by Johnson, scoring Trey Majette.

MVSU scored all of their runs in the top of the fourth inning, first from a solo homer to tie the game at 1-1. Right after that, an RBI-double gave the Delta Devils their first lead of the day at 2-1, then a two-run homer doubled the lead to 4-1.

The Gamecocks cut the lead in half in the home half of the fourth inning with Matthew Cash's sacrifice bunt, In the bottom of the fifth inning, Sam Richardson made it a one-run game when he walked with the bases loaded. Back-to-back sac flies by Jaxon Pate and Ryan Stevens put the Gamecocks ahead after five innings by a score of 5-4.

Jax State plated a couple of insurance runs late in the game, the first in the bottom of the seventh, when Grayson Ash brought Cash home on an RBI-single. Richardson did the same to plate Peña in the eighth inning, putting the lead up to 7-4, which would be the eventual final.

Jax State returns to action on Friday, February 27, for a three-game set against the Memphis Tigers at FedExPark. It will be the first time the Gamecocks hit the road this year.
