JACKSONVILLE—Everything clicked at the end for Jax State in their overtime win over Delaware on Thursday in a nationally televised contest.
The Gamecocks (14-14, 9-8 CUSA) went 4-of-5 from the field and 9-of-9 at the free throw line in the extra session to come away with an 80-70 win over the Blue Hens at the Pete Mathews Coliseum. It ended a four-game losing streak and move into a tie for fourth in the league standings.
"I thought we made some second effort plays tonight that maybe we haven't," said coach
Ray Harper. "We didn't want to just settle for three's tonight, we wanted to have balance and get the ball inside and I don't think we did."
Jax State had a seven-point lead at the 15:15 mark of the first on a triple by
AC Bryant, and again at the 13:04 mark of the first on a
Jacoby Hill layup which marked the biggest lead for either team in regulation in a game that featured 11 ties and 16 lead changes.
Down five with 1:15 left in the first, the Gamecocks got a 3-pointer by
Jamar Franklin and a layup by
Mostapha El Moutaouakkil to tie the game at 25 at the break.
Delaware (9-19, 5-12 CUSA) scored the first four of the second half, but Franklin got his team back within a point with a 3-pointer with 18:14 remaining, and Hill gave the Gamecocks the lead with a layup on the next possession.
Franklin finished with a career-high 24 points, connecting on 8-of-15 from 3-point land. Hill finished with 17 off the bench.
The Blue Hens took a three-point lead on a three-point play by Justyn Fernandez at the 9:32 mark, but Hill and Franklin answered again to push the hosts up two with 8:31 left.
El Moutaouakkil gave Jax State a 61-59 lead with a layup with 27 seconds left, and a tying layup attempt at the other end with 11 seconds remaining was swatted by
Iaroslav Niagu. Fernandez was able to connect on a jumper with eight seconds left to force overtime.
In the extra session, El Moutaouakkil had seven of his 21 points to help Jax State lead by as many as 13 during a 12-0 run in overtime after Delaware got a triple from Fernandez to start the extra period.
Jax State finished the game making 17 consecutive free throws, and connected on a total of 11 3-pointers. They also won the battle in the post by outrebounding Delaware 38-29 and outscored them 30-16 in the paint.
The Gamecocks will play their final home regular season game on Saturday at 5 p.m. against Liberty on ESPNU.
