LYNCHBURG, Va. — The Jax State track and field program kicked off day one of the finale of the indoor season with the Conference USA Championships on Friday afternoon, highlighted by a pair of top marks in school history being set.
After holding the fourth longest distance in school history in the long jump since Dec. 5,
Tierra Agee had her chance to improve upon her personal best and did just that with a 5.87m leap for a program record. Agee's performance was enough to give her a sixth-place finish with a lot of momentum headed into the outdoor season.
As for freshman Claudia Marquez, the young athlete has been a frequent headliner for Jax State throughout the indoor season. During day one of competition, Marquez broke her own school record for the third time this season in the 800m prelims, finishing with a time of 2:09.71 for the program-best mark. Marquez will have a chance to improve her time tomorrow afternoon in the 800m finals at 2:20 p.m.
Throughout the day, the Gamecocks picked up a total of six top ten finishes, including two top fives.
One of those top fives came from junior
Chaci Whitfield who participated in the pentathlon. Whitfield started off hot in the 60m hurdles by finishing in second place with an 8.90 second time, which is the fifth fastest in school history. Whitfield went on to place 10
th in the pentathlon overall, with 3,335 points for a personal best and the fifth best point total in program history.
Freshman
Cheyenne Hill was responsible for the other top-five finish, which she achieved in the 60m hurdles prelims. Hill finished the event in 8.58 seconds which was enough for a third-place finish and a spot in the final round tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
Also with opportunities in final rounds tomorrow are
Amiyah Johnson and
Viola Jepleting. Johnson placed seventh in the 60m dash prelims with a time of 7.49 seconds which tied her personal best for the third fastest time in school history. Jepleting placed seventh as well in the one-mile prelims, finishing in 4:52.68.
The Gamecocks had a few others achieve all-time top-ten performances in program history as well, including
Ella-Grace Edwards' 7.61 second time and
Jailah Loving's 7.70 second time in the 60m dash prelims for the fourth and ninth fastest times in school history, respectively. Additionally, Rania Yousef Moreno finished the 800m in 2:17.66 for the ninth fastest time in team history.
Jax State will be back in action tomorrow morning for the second and final day of competition, beginning with the high jump at 11 a.m.
