LYNCHBURG, Va. — The Jax State track and field program has boasted a star-studded freshmen class so far this indoor season, and it proved it to be true during the final day of competition at the Conference USA Indoor Championships on Saturday.
Viola Jepleting became the headliner for the Gamecocks all day long as the freshman broke two school records in different events for Jax State.
Jepleting kicked off her day by participating in the one mile finals, in which she placed fifth with a time of 4:49.74 to break her own school record that she set just two weeks ago at the Music City Challenge in Nashville.
Later on, Jepleting competed in the 3000m where she placed 15
th out of 45 competitors with a time of 9:51.86 to set another top mark in school history.
The Gamecocks had a few other additional highlights in the last day of the meet, featuring two more top-five finishes.
The first of which came from
Cheyenne Hill who placed third in the prelim round of the 60m hurdles. Hill placed just outside of the podium in the finals, finishing fourth with a time of 8.51 seconds.
Claudia Marquez also got in on the action, putting together another impressive performance in the 800m. Marquez placed fifth in the event with a 2:09.77 time, which was just sixth tenths of a second off the school record time in which she placed the day before.
"I'm proud of the competitiveness they showed," said coach
Jeremy Provence. "The results do not reflect the improvements we have made as a team. We're ready to get back to work and prepare for outdoor season."
The 4x400m relay team of
Emma Drinkard,
Erin Foley,
Amber Bailey and Marquez had its best outing of the indoor season, placing sixth with a time of 3:46.77 which is the third fastest in program history.
The Gamecocks had four other athletes compete on Saturday, including
Amiyah Johnson who placed seventh in the 60m dash finals with a time of 7.53 seconds. Additionally,
Jadyn Bonds placed 15
th in the high jump with a distance of 1.61m. Rounding out the individual performances for the day was
Maddyn Conn and
Naum Kibiwott who finished the 3000m in 10:20.91 and 10:25.68, respectively.
