Box Score LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Jax State women's basketball held New Mexico State to their season low in point total Saturday afternoon in a 57-38 road victory.
The Gamecocks (14-15, 8-9) held New Mexico State (9-19, 5-11) to their season low and was the Gamecocks' best defensive performance against a Division I this season. Jax State's held Point to 30 points and Brewton-Parker to 35 points earlier this season. New Mexico State shot 17-of-59 (28.8%) and 2-of-12 (16.7%) from three against Jax State's defense.
The Gamecocks were led by
Mya Barnes who scored 13 points and tied
Brooklyn McDaniel for a team-best six rebounds.
Adriana Jones added 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting and 2-of-3 from three, while
Kyera Thornsbury had 11 points on 3-of-5 shooting. Barnes had a team-high four blocks and Thornsbury led Jax State with three assists.
Jax State and New Mexico State both started the games slow, but the Gamecocks were able to hold a 6-4 lead after the opening 10 minutes. A
Mina Djurdjevic made free throw capped a quick 5-0 run to open the second quarter and make it 11-4 Gamecocks. After an Aggie basket, Jax State went up 17-8. NMSU made a last second layup at the end of the second quarter with Jax State in front 23-16 at the half.
Jax State came out of the half hot. The Gamecocks outscored the Aggies 24-16 in the third quarter to go up 47-30 heading to the fourth. In the final 10 minutes, Jax State held New Mexico State to only eight points. Maria Sanchez-Ponce made a layup at the 2:24 mark for the final Jax State basket of the contest and extend the Gamecocks' advantage to 21 points.
Jax State only allows 58.2 points per game this season, ranking first in CUSA.
Next up, Jax State returns to Pete Mathews Coliseum on Saturday, March 7, to take on rival Kennesaw State at 2 p.m. The game will be the conclusion of the regular season and senior day for Jax State.
