2009 OUTLOOK: A local product from Alexandria that is an extremely hard worker and a proven winner…a fine hitter that could help the team with his bat…continues to work hard defensively to become a good defensive first baseman.

SUMMER BASEBALL: Played for Roberto Martinez of the East Alabama Big Train in the Great South League in 2008.

JSU CAREER: (2008) Sat out the season as a redshirt.

HIGH SCHOOL: Played for Andy Shaw at Alexandria High School for six years…batted .373 as a senior to earn honorable mention All-State honors and was named the Calhoun County Tournament Most Valuable Player after helping the Valley Cubs to the title…was named team Most Valuable Player as a senior…was selected to the North-South All-Star game and also the East-West All-Star game twice…also lettered in football and basketball…was an All-State selection in football as a senior and was a finalist for the Class 4A Back of the Year by the Alabama Sports Writers Association…led the Valley Cubs to four consecutive trips to the AHSAA state semi-finals in the football playoffs…was named the Anniston Star Class 4A-6A Player of the Year and to the Dandy Dozen team…was named the WJXS-TV 24 Quarterback of the Year in 2006…was a five-year lettermen in basketball, helping the Valley Cubs to three County Championships…was named to the Anniston Star’s Fab Five basketball team for three years.

PERSONAL: Full name is Jacob Gregory Welch…son of Kevin and Sherry Welch…born on November 19, 1987…has one older brother, Zac, who played four years of baseball at the University of Alabama from 2002-2006…his uncle, Roger Boozer, played at Auburn on the 1968 College World Series team…lists Johnny Damon as his favorite Major League player…major is undeclared at JSU.
